Brief History of First Baptist Church of Hokes Bluff
First Baptist Church, Hokes Bluff, is located in the heart of Hokes Bluff, on the bluff of the Coosa River. Organized in 1842 as Liberty Baptist Church, it is one of the oldest churches in Etowah County.
The first church building was a crude log cabin. Through the years members have worshipped in a second log cabin, a white frame building, and a brick structure built in 1938. In 1959 a 3-story educational wing was built and then a new sanctuary and fellowship hall were constructed in 1983-84.
The Youth Center, which is housed in the first brick structure, has recently been renovated and will be dedicated on Sunday night, January 2nd, 2005 when the congregation meets there for worship.
First Baptist Church of Hokes Bluff has a rich heritage of mission education and mission giving. Through the years several of its members have been called to the mission field (see Missionary page).
